Dave Johnsen, multi-instrumentalist, composer, native New Yorker and current Brooklyn resident, has been studying music for most of his life with a focus on Bass. He started touring full time as a freelance bassist early in his life and has since acquired a long list of touring and session credits both nationally and internationally. He has shared the stage with many Frank Zappa Band alumni including Ike Willis, Ray White, Mike Keneally, Napolean Murphy Brock and Don Preston, as touring bassist for Project/Object: Frank Zappa Tribute. Dave was the bassist for Mahavishnu Project, a Mahavishnu Orchestra/John McLaughlin/Jeff Beck repertory group of NYC session musicians, and is featured on their Cuneiform Records release, “Return to the Emerald Beyond”. He has also worked for Miles Davis keyboardist Adam Holzman in his jazz fusion group Brave New World as well as his side band Garage Project and the Jane Getter Band/Trio. He has performed throughout NYC at many premier venues such as BB Kings’, Gramercy Theater, Webster Hall, Knitting Factory, Brooklyn Bowl, Iridium Jazz Club and festivals like Moog Fest and Green Apple Music Fest, as well as clinics at the Collective. Years of touring, session and sub gigs have led him to work with such fine musicians as Jan Hammer (mahavishnu orchestra, miami vice), Anton Fig (david letterman band), Jon Fishman (phish), Dave Fuzinski, Eric Slick (dr. dog), Joel Rosenblatt (spyro gyra), Jane Getter, Denny Walley (zappa, beefheart), Chuck Garvey (moe), Jamie Masefield (jazz mandolin project), Gregg Bendian (pat methany, ornette coleman), Darrin James Band, Gary Lucas (captain beefheart), Zach Brock (stanley clarke band), Glenn Alexander, Skerik (les claypool), Rob Thomas (berklee-strings dept), Catch 22 (victory records) and many more.

Besides freelancing, Dave was a long standing member of the funk/surf/punk group the Insidious Rays as well as co-led the progressive rock heavy weight Wavetaster. He has recently formed his own jazz rock side project called Quisqueya, which has been touring and has a recording due out soon. Dave Johnsen has endorsements with Gallien Kruger bass amps, Tech 21/SansAmp, and Dean Markely strings. Check out davejohnsen.com for more.
